Calvi Pool Villas in Corsica

Author: Dorte Holm Jensen

By train all the way through Europe, via Florence to Livorno at the Italian seashore, covered quite a foreign terrain, & filled the brain with countless visual impressions & food for thoughts.

We entered Bastia by boat after a restless night in a budget Italian hotel room-mating with myriads of cockroaches.

Driving across the Island from Bastia to Calvi lurked out the right holiday enthusiasm. The pleasing smell of lavender sneaked in through the open windows & welcomed us to this wonderful island.

For 3 weeks we slept in a tiny tent in walking distance from the the coast. We lived essentially on flutes & raw vegetables, spend the days floating & sunbathing & dancing the nights away in Calvi.

We returned home a month later bronzed by the sun, slimmed & full of getupandgo & inspiration.

Having experienced a vacation on the cheap makes it so much easier to pay respects to the advantages of renting a Calvi villa for a family holiday. Many of the rental villas in Calvi has private pool & are very luxurious & tastefully furnished.

Did I touch on the beaches? They are long, white, tempting & exceptionally clean. Furthermore the wind makes even the hottest month bearable by the seaside, as long as you give protection to your head from the constant sharp sun. A cotton hat, that you can soak in the sea regularly, keeps your head cooled off. There is much to be said for a Calvi Beach Holiday!

Calvi has no more than 6000 inhabitants. It is placed on the North-West coast of the island – 59 km from Bastia. The town has ferry connections with the French mainland (Marseille, Nice, and Toulon) and luxurious yachts visit the harbor. Calvi is a charming old fishing town and fishing is still of some importance, even though tourism is now the big earner.

You will not be bored stiff with Calvi. You can follow the world go by from a seaside pavement cafe, shop fashionable clothes in the ancient part of the town, eat gourmet dinners at the different restaurants or drop in on the piano bar in the medieval Citadel for live music.

Water sport is not hard to find in the neighborhood and on the island as a whole you can go horse-riding , hike, walk the mountains & even play golf.

From June to September the Citadel houses art exhibitions by professional local artists from across the whole island of Corsica..

At the end of June each year The Calvi Jazz Festival attracts celebrities from the Jazz scene & you can be present at concerts in the Citadel & jam sessions on the Quay Landry.

“Calvi On The Rocks” occur every year in July. It consists of electronic music & a digital arts festival with nightly concert in the Fortress.

I hope you have a wonderful trip to Corsica – the birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte – & whether you select a hostel, a hotel or a villa vacation in Calvi – I am absolutely sure you will take pleasure in the charming town & the delightful surroundings.

The Ins And Outs Of Lisbon

Author: Adam Singleton

Like any capital city, Portugal’s Lisbon has plenty of attractions to inspire travellers to visit. Full of beauty and charm, Lisbon appeals to history boffins, sport fans and culture vultures.

Football fans across Europe will know Lisbon for sporting reasons. The city’s two main clubs – Benfica and Sporting – often battle it out with Porto for the national league and all three have enjoyed recent forays into European competitions. Benfica’s stadium – The Stadium of Light – may ring a bell to many, as it is the arena that Sunderland named their own stadium after.

It’s not all football, though. The city is located on the Tagus Estuary which stretches a whopping 14km – enough room to house all the world’s warships. The harbour houses the Torre de Belem – a tower that has had many purposes over the years. First used to help defend the harbour from invaders, it later became a prison and now acts as a reminder of Portugal’s seafaring past and offers panoramic views of the city. The river bank also has a statue of Cristo Rei (Christ the King) to commemorate the nation surviving World War II despite having no direct involvement in the fighting.

History is a big thing in Lisbon although much of the city was destroyed in 1755 when an enormous earthquake shook the city to rubble; claiming the lives of more than 40,000 residents. Legend has it that the rumbling could be felt as far away as Norway. The Alfama was one section of Lisbon that survived the earthquake and gives visitors a great taste of pre-18th century Portugal.

For those wanting to go further back in time, there are Roman remnants underneath the streets of Lisbon’s downtown. This area – that has chambers, rooms, bridges and corridors – is only open to the public two days a year because of the safety worries.

The rebuilding of the city centre was done much in black and white – black to match the clothing worn by St Vincent while the white, not only good for the heat, is symbolic of the attire of the Christian Crusaders who defeated the Moors. Many Lisbon hotels, as well as bars, restaurants and other modern tourist amenities stick to this colour scheme.

Not all visitors to the city wish to stay in the centre. Known as the ‘town of seven hills’, Lisbon is perfect for walking and hiking enthusiasts. However, for those who prefer to take things a bit more easily on holiday, the city has kindly installed street elevators to take people up the more taxing inclines. The main one – The Ascensor de Santa Justa – takes people 45 metres from the Baxia Elevator to the Chiado District, another popular tourist destination.
